If you need to add a note to a PDF and download it without creating an account, start with PDFgear. We did that with a one-page test file and inspected the downloaded PDF: the note was present, with no visible watermark. If you need to type a signature, PDF24 was easier in our browser test. If you need to change words already printed in the PDF, Sejda has that editing control, but its free use is limited.

The phrase edit a PDF hides two different jobs. Adding text puts a new text box over the page. Changing existing text alters words that are already in the file. A tool that does the first may not do the second. That difference matters more than a long feature list when you have a form to finish in five minutes.

The quick comparison

Browser editor No account for our test? Add text Type and place a signature Change existing selectable text Free limit and export evidence
PDFgear Yes Yes; saved in our downloaded file Tool offered; placement did not work in our test No in browser Vendor says 100 MB per file, no usage cap, and watermark-free exports. Our downloaded sample had no visible watermark.
PDF24 Yes Yes Yes, in the editor No direct text replacement Vendor says no registration, subscription, or time limit. The editor reported that it created and downloaded our edited PDF; we could not inspect that saved file in this browser session.
Sejda Yes Yes, per editor and guide Offered Yes; we changed “DRAFT” to “READY” in the editor 200 pages or 50 MB, three tasks per hour. The result view stayed blank in our browser, so we could not verify the exported file.

How we tested: On 2 November 2026, we uploaded the same fictional, one-page PDF in Chrome. It contained a status line, a blank note line, and a blank signature line. We tried adding a review note, placing a fictional “J. Test” signature, and changing “DRAFT” to “READY” where the editor supported it. Download the sample PDF to repeat the test. We signed into none of the three services. A visible editing control is not proof that the exported file contains the change, so the table separates what we saw in the editor from what we verified after download.

1. PDFgear: best for a quick note and a verified export

PDFgear opened the sample without an account. Its Free Text tool placed a note on the page. We clicked Download PDF, opened the saved file, and found the new note in the PDF text. There was no visible watermark. You can compare our downloaded result with the blank sample above.

This is a good fit for annotating a form, adding a short instruction, or filling a blank space. PDFgear says its online editor processes the document locally in the browser, accepts files up to 100 MB, and has no usage or time limit. We did not audit its network traffic, so treat the processing location as the company’s claim.

Watch out for two things. First, the browser editor does not replace existing text; PDFgear says that feature needs its free desktop app. Second, its signature menu let us create a typed signature, but we could not place it on our test page. Do not assume a signature is present until you reopen your downloaded file. Our first note wrapped and was clipped in the export. We shortened it to “Reviewed 2 Nov,” then downloaded and checked it again. Adjust the text box and inspect the exported page if appearance matters.

2. PDF24: best for a typed signature and more free tools

PDF24 let us add the note, create a typed “J. Test” signature, and place it on the sample page without an account. After we saved, its editor displayed a message that the new PDF had been created and downloaded. We could see both edits in the editor, but the exported file was not available for us to reopen in this browser session. That is a limit of this test, not evidence that the file is missing for every user.

The PDF24 editor is funded by ads and says it has no registration, forced premium tier, or time restriction. PDF24 also says the same tools are available without watermarks. Its online tools run on its servers; the editor page says files are handled in Germany and automatically deleted after one hour. If a document is sensitive, read the service’s terms before uploading it.

The online editor adds text and signatures on top of a PDF. PDF24’s own answer about changing existing text recommends converting to Word, editing there, and converting back. That can disturb a document’s layout. Keep a copy of the original and inspect the final pages.

3. Sejda: try it when the printed words must change

Sejda’s Text control let us click the existing “Status: DRAFT” line and change it to “Status: READY” in the browser editor. Neither PDFgear’s browser editor nor PDF24 offered the same direct control in our test. Sejda documents that feature for PDFs with selectable text.

Its free tier has a clear ceiling: 200 pages or 50 MB per document, with three tasks per hour. We used one task. The site then showed a result dialog, but that dialog remained blank in our browser, including after a retry, so we could not download and inspect the output. If you need this particular feature, try one harmless page first and confirm the saved result before working on an important document.

A scanned PDF is a picture of words, not selectable text. Sejda says scanned text cannot be changed directly. You may need OCR, and OCR can make mistakes. Also, putting a white box over text is not secure redaction: the old content may remain in the file. Use a dedicated redaction tool for information that must be removed.

Which one should you use?

  • Add a note or fill a blank line: Use PDFgear. Its downloaded result passed our simple check.
  • Type a signature and use other free PDF tools: Try PDF24, then open your downloaded file to check the signature and any watermark before sending it.
  • Replace existing selectable words: Try Sejda on a copy and verify its export. Its hourly limit makes it less convenient for repeated jobs.
  • Handle a scanned or confidential document: Check the file type and processing location first. A desktop editor may be a better fit when you do not want to upload the file.

If you only do this occasionally, you may not need another PDF subscription. Work through one real document, inspect the saved copy, and then decide whether a paid plan solves a problem you actually have. Our subscription audit guide can help you spot other plans you only use for one-off jobs.

One finished PDF is a small win against subscription creep. When the next one-off job comes along, Jovita helps you find a tool, get the work done, and move on without another monthly plan.

Features and limits were checked against the linked vendors’ pages on 2 November 2026. Our browser test used one fictional, one-page PDF, so it does not establish how these editors behave with large files, unusual fonts, complex forms, or every browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free PDF editor without sign-up or a watermark?

For adding text to a PDF, PDFgear is the clearest choice from our test: we downloaded our edited sample without signing in, and the exported file had no visible watermark. PDF24 also allowed editing and reported a completed download without an account. Check the saved file yourself before sending it.

Can a free online PDF editor change text already in a PDF?

Sejda's browser editor let us select and change existing selectable text in our sample. Its free limit is 200 pages or 50 MB and three tasks per hour. PDFgear's browser editor and PDF24 mainly add content on top; PDFgear says its free desktop app can change existing text. Scanned PDFs need a separate OCR step.

Can I sign a PDF online for free without creating an account?

PDF24 let us type and place a fictional signature in its editor without signing in. PDFgear offers a signature tool, but we could not get its typed signature to appear on our test page, so test your own export before relying on it.

Is it safe to upload a private PDF to a free editor?

Check where the file is processed before uploading sensitive documents. PDFgear says its browser editor processes files locally. PDF24 says it processes files on servers in Germany and deletes them after one hour; Sejda says it deletes uploads after two hours. Those are vendor claims, not independent security audits.
