How to Edit, Sign, and Merge PDFs Without Adobe Acrobat

If you need to change a date already printed in a PDF, sign it, and attach a second PDF once, start with PDFgear for Mac. Its free desktop app offers direct text editing, signatures, and merging. If you cannot install an app, Sejda is a browser route with free limits. If you only need to fill a blank, sign, and combine pages, the Preview app already on your Mac may be enough.

That distinction is the whole decision. Many pages promise to “edit PDFs” when they mean add a text box. A text box does not change the words already stored in the file. If the old date must actually be corrected, check for a tool that edits existing selectable text. If the PDF is a scan, it may need OCR or a fresh export from the original document.

Pick the route that matches your actual job

Adobe’s US pricing page lists Acrobat Standard at $14.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly. Its free Reader is for viewing and other basic use; the plan comparison places text editing and combining in paid tiers. That listed monthly amount is not a one-month price for a one-off job. Prices and offers vary by country and checkout choice.

1. On a Mac, change the actual text with PDFgear

First, duplicate the PDF so you can compare the finished version with the original. In PDFgear’s Mac guide, the route is Edit → Edit Text & Image, click the existing text block, replace the words, exit editing, then save. Its Mac product page also describes typed or drawn signatures, and its merge guide puts merging under Hot Tools → Merge PDF.

For the one-off date example, correct the date before signing. Then add the signature, merge the attachment in the intended order, and reopen the final PDF. Check the corrected date, signature position, page count, and page order. Complex fonts and forms can change appearance even when a tool supports the feature.

The app’s features and price above come from PDFgear’s own pages. We have not independently completed this three-step workflow in its Mac app. Our earlier browser-editor test verified an exported PDF with added text and no visible watermark, but PDFgear says its browser editor cannot replace existing text. Do not use that browser test as proof of the Mac app’s text replacement or signature output.

2. If you cannot install an app, use Sejda for the correction

In Sejda’s PDF editor, upload a copy, choose Text, and click the existing selectable words you need to change. Add a visible signature in the same editor session, apply the changes, and download. Then open the merge tool, add the edited PDF and the attachment, arrange them, and download the combined result. This is normally two tasks: edit and sign, then merge.

Sejda’s editor states a free limit of 200 pages or 50 MB and three tasks per hour. Its merge page lists a tighter 50-page or 50-MB free limit and the same hourly task limit. The online service says uploads are deleted after two hours; its desktop option is a local alternative. In our 2 November browser test, we changed existing sample text in Sejda’s editor, but the result view stayed blank, so we could not inspect the downloaded file. Try a harmless page first and verify your own export before relying on it.

3. If you only need to fill, sign, and combine, use Preview

Apple’s Preview guide shows how to fill form fields, add a text box, and place a signature made with a trackpad, camera, or nearby device. Its merge instructions use the thumbnail sidebar: open both PDFs, show thumbnails, then drag pages from one into the other. Duplicate your files first because Preview can save changes automatically.

Preview is the simplest free route for a blank form or a document that only needs a visible signature. Do not treat a white rectangle over the old date as a real edit or redaction. The original content can remain underneath. If the date itself must change, ask for the source file or use direct text editing. For private files, Preview’s local workflow also avoids uploading them to a web editor.

What to check before sending the finished PDF

1. Can you select the old words? If not, it may be a scanned image. OCR can misread characters; compare the result with the original.
2. Did the old text really change? Search or copy the corrected date from the saved PDF. A covering shape can leave the old text in the file.
3. Is the signature the kind requested? A visible typed or drawn mark is different from a certificate-backed digital signature or a managed signing workflow. Follow the recipient’s instructions.
4. Did merging preserve what matters? Reopen the final file and check page order, form fields, links, and bookmarks if you need them. PDFgear’s merge guide specifically cautions that links, bookmarks, annotations, and form fields may not always survive unchanged.
5. Where is the document processed? PDFgear says its browser merger runs locally, while PDF24 says its online files are processed on German servers and deleted after one hour. Sejda says its uploaded files are deleted after two hours. These are vendor statements, not an independent security review.

Why we wrote this as a task, not a list of apps

Public questions such as “How do you edit and sign PDFs without paying for Adobe?” and requests for an Acrobat alternative without a subscription describe a job and a constraint, not a desire to compare twenty brands. We also posed a one-off edit, sign, and merge question in temporary ChatGPT and Gemini chats. ChatGPT’s response failed to load, so only Gemini yielded an answer we could inspect. This was an illustrative answer probe, not search-volume data. Gemini suggested a white-box workaround and described Sejda’s limit as three tasks per day; Sejda’s current pages say three tasks per hour. That is why the workflow and source checks above matter more than a generic chatbot recommendation.

If your PDF job takes ten minutes and comes up twice a year, a recurring plan is a poor default. Start with the free route that fits the file, inspect the finished result, and pay only when an advanced requirement makes that necessary.
